Table feel

Volterra has a high level of direct confrontation and strategic depth in confrontation. Players need to frequently pay attention to and react to each other's strategies and turns. However, the game does not emphasize cooperation as much.

Replay value

Volterra offers a high level of variability with its gameboard, allowing for different experiences each time it is played. The presence of expansions adds new content and enhances gameplay. The game also provides deep strategic possibilities and room for improvement in tactics and strategies. The player interaction score is moderate, and the game scales well with different numbers of players. While it may take some time to learn, the depth it offers makes it worth the effort. Overall, Volterra has a strong replayability score of 7.7.

Luck profile

Volterra has a moderate influence of luck. Random elements have a notable but not exclusive impact on the game outcome. While players have some ability to mitigate randomness through strategic decisions, luck still plays a significant role. The game outcome is a balanced mix of luck and strategy.

Overview

In medieval times in Volterra, Tuscany, it was custom for rival families to compete to construct buildings. The higher the tower, the wealthier the family. To this day, the vestiges of this contest — the "dynasty towers" — remain visible in many Tuscan towns. Wealth is not important in the tactical game Volterra. Here, the towers rise upwards thanks to the tactical skill of the master builders. The pieces in play are stacked on top of each other, step by step. The play counters do their utmost to defend towers of their own color. Building continues on the shrinking play area until no counters can move. Now, who is sitting atop the highest tower? —description from the publisher
