Replay value

Breakthrough has a high replayability score due to its high variability gameboard, strategic depth, and scalability. The presence of expansions and moderate easiness to learn also contribute to its replay value.

Luck profile

Breakthrough has a moderate level of randomness impact, where random elements have a notable but not exclusive impact on the game outcome. However, players have substantial ability to mitigate randomness through strategic decisions and planning, resulting in a game outcome primarily determined by player strategy and decisions, with luck playing a minor role.

Overview

Breakthrough was designed by William Daniel 'Dan' Troyka in 2000 and originally played on a 7x7 board. After the size of the board was changed, it won the 2001 8x8 Game Design Competition, sponsored by About Board Games, Abstract Games Magazine and the Strategy Gaming Society. The game is simple but addictive -- the goal is to try to get one of your pieces to the other side of the board before your opponent does the same. For 2 players.
