Welfen und Staufer has a moderate influence of luck. Random elements have a notable but not exclusive impact on the game outcome. While there is some room for players to mitigate the effects of randomness through strategic decisions, luck still plays a significant role. The game has a balanced mix of luck and strategy, with the outcome being influenced by both player decisions and luck.
Welfen und Staufer (Guelf and Ghibelline) depicts the conflict between the most influential noble families in Germany 12. century - the Welfen and the Staufer. Both players try to have one of their family members crowned king (and later kaiser) by influencing the other German nobles, e.g. by conquest. The board shows a beautiful map of Germany, France and Italy in medieval style, and uses lots and lots wood tokens with the (historically correct) coat of arms of the German nobility.
