However, players have substantial ability to mitigate the effects of randomness through strategic decisions and planning. Overall, Inseln Toppen! strikes a good balance between luck and strategy, making it an engaging and strategic board game.
Inseln toppen! is a reimplementation of Länder toppen!, but this time, you are playing with islands rather than countries. The game mainly consists of cards which show an island and some data about that island: size, population, highest mountain etc. Each player has a cardboard strip with 12 slots. In each turn, you get a number of island cards and a few blanks, and you place them face-down in the different slots at the strip, either above or below. The blank cards are used so you don't give away which slots you are using. When all players are done, everyone reveals the first card and compares the first value (size), and the player with the highest number wins. In the second slot, the smallest size wins, etc. After each trick, the winning player sorts cards they won by ocean. At the end of the game, whoever has most cards for a given ocean scores for that ocean, ohter players discard their cards for that ocean. The player who has most cards afterwards, wins the game.
