Table feel

Bughouse Chess has a high level of direct confrontation with battles and blocking moves. It also involves strategic decision-making that indirectly affects opponents. Players need to be aware of and react to others' strategies frequently. However, the game does not require a significant level of cooperation.

Replay value

Bughouse Chess has a high variability gameboard, with different experiences each time it is played. The presence of expansions adds some new content and gameplay elements, but there is room for improvement in this aspect. The game offers deep strategic possibilities and allows players to discover new tactics and strategies. The player interaction score is average. The game scales well with different numbers of players without compromising its appeal or balance. It is moderately easy to learn, providing a balance between accessibility and depth. Overall, Bughouse Chess has a good replayability score of 7.45.

Luck profile

Bughouse Chess has a low influence of luck. Random elements have minimal impact on the game outcome, and players have substantial ability to mitigate randomness through strategic decisions and planning. The game outcome is primarily determined by player strategy and decisions, with luck playing a minor role.

Overview

Bughouse Chess is a variation of chess played with two teams of two people on two chess boards. Chess clocks are used, generally with 5 minute time controls. Team members sit beside each other playing opposite colors. Each player plays his opponent as in standard chess, except that whenever a piece is captured, it is given to the teammate. The teammate can then decide to play a normal move, or place the captured piece on any unoccupied square of the board (exception: pawns cannot be placed on the 1st or 8th rank). Team members have to work together and against the clock to win. The first person to lose by checkmate or time loses for his or her team, thus ending both games.
