Beggars and Thieves offers a high level of variability with its gameboard and expansions, providing fresh experiences each time. The strategic depth allows players to continually improve their tactics, while the game scales well with different player counts. Although it may take some time to learn, the overall replayability score is excellent.
Beggars and Thieves has a moderate level of luck involved in the game. Random elements such as dice rolls or card draws have a notable but not exclusive impact on the game outcome. Players have some ability to mitigate the effects of randomness through strategic decisions and planning. The game's outcome is a balanced mix of luck and strategy, with neither element dominating. Overall, Beggars and Thieves offers a good balance between luck and player agency.
A trick-taking game of unequal suits - there are three beggar suits (where most of the points are) and one thief suit (which is the trump suit). The game also features variable partnerships from hand to hand (determined by the play of one of the thief cards.) The game came packaged with two identical decks with different backs, with the exception of the Swedish edition which instead sported a plastic card tray. Beggars & Thieves is not a perfect game, but was definitely ahead of it's time, fitting in nicely with the plethora of "tweaked" trick-taking games we see today.
